AUM Students Serve in Disaster Relief

Our team from Auburn University at Montgomery had a great experience serving in Summerton, S.C.

We were deployed to a low-income apartment complex on Saturday morning where three feet of water had covered the bottom floor.

We spent two eight-hour days removing everything to the studs, 48 inches and below. This included sheetrock, insulation, carpet, tile and several layers of linoleum.

Once we stripped everything down to the studs, the apartments were pressure-washed and disinfected.

In two days, we were able to do so for 12 apartments. I cannot tell you how proud I am of our students. They worked tirelessly for two days to get the job done.

The site manager of the apartment complex told us that if it was not for our disaster relief team those apartments would have been boarded up and shut down, because it was going to cost so much to repair them. Now they are hoping to have residents moved back in by Christmas.

I also want to mention how well our team was cared for by Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers. They were so helpful and caring toward our students — not to mention the food was really good!

It was a fantastic experience for our students. Even before we left, some of them were asking when we were coming back.
